Will it arrive before Christmas?

Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, 2026. Every other date on this page is softer than it looks, including the ones retailers print in red.

The rule: the only date that binds is the delivery estimate shown at checkout for your address, on that item, at the moment you pay. A carrier's published cutoff is a national average. Your postcode, the seller and the weather are not averages.

Where the cutoffs usually fall

We deliberately do not reprint the dates here. The USPS has published its 2026 deadlines; UPS, FedEx and the large retailers publish their own through November, none of them agree with each other, and all of them get revised. A page that copies those numbers is a page that is quietly wrong by December, so we link to the source instead: USPS holiday shipping deadlines (opens in a new tab).

What is stable is the shape. Standard ground shipping inside the US typically closes somewhere in the middle of December. Faster paid tiers run several days later, and the overnight options go right up to a day or two before the holiday at a price that usually exceeds the gift. Anything crossing a border wants weeks, not days.

Check your retailer's own cutoff as well as the carrier's. It is usually the earlier of the two, because the shop needs a day to get the parcel into the network before the carrier's clock starts.

What quietly moves your date earlier

These are the things that catch people who thought they had a week in hand.

Two practical habits beat all of this: order to arrive a week early rather than a day early, and have it sent to where the recipient actually is rather than where you will be seeing them.

If you have already missed it

First, check whether you really have. A delivery estimate that lands on Christmas Eve is usually fine for a gift opened on the day, and many estimates are deliberately pessimistic.

If the date is genuinely gone, the options in order: an in-store pickup if the thing exists locally, a digital gift that arrives by email, or a gift card with a written note. We would skip the fourth option, which is ordering anyway and pretending it was meant to be a January present. Everyone can tell.

Whatever you send, say in a line why you chose it. Nobody remembers which day a present turned up. They remember whether it was obviously meant for them.

What to buy when the window is short

Small, unbreakable and not size-dependent, which rules out clothing and anything fragile. A few that hold up: merino socks, an instant-read thermometer, a hot sauce flight or a 1000-piece puzzle. The reasoning behind each, and the cases where they fall flat, is in last-minute gifts that don't look last-minute.

The picks

Ordering in November: you have room for anything, including the things worth timing to a sale. Black Friday gift ideas 2026 covers which categories actually move.

Ordering in the first half of December: stay away from personalised and marketplace items and you will almost certainly be fine.

Ordering in the last week: stop browsing and start from the person. The picker takes three questions, and a specific small thing bought on the 22nd reads better than a broad expensive thing bought on the 1st.
