Gifts for someone who has everything

They do not have everything. They have everything they would buy for themselves, which is a much smaller and much more specific list.

The rule: buy in the gap between what they want and what they can justify. Most people have a category they under-spend in — usually the one they think of as frivolous.

Where the gap usually is

The upgrade they cannot justify. They own a perfectly fine version and will not replace it while it works. A good chef knife for someone cooking with a supermarket one. Real noise-cancelling headphones for someone using the free earbuds. This is where the "has everything" person is most reachable, because the barrier was never money — it was permission.

Comfort they consider indulgent. The weighted blanket, slippers with an actual sole, the sunrise alarm clock. Practical people are often bad at buying these for themselves.

The hobby they do badly and love anyway. Not a new hobby — the existing one. Someone who camps twice a year is often still using the cheapest headlamp they ever bought.

Time-shaped gifts. A Lego botanical set or a two-player board game is not really an object. It is a licence to spend three evenings doing nothing useful, which the sort of person who has everything is usually terrible at giving themselves.

What to avoid

Do not go more expensive. That is the instinct and it is wrong: in our experience someone with taste and disposable income judges an expensive miss more harshly than a cheap one. Go more specific instead. Price is not the axis that impresses this person; noticing is.

And do not buy a second one of something they already love. It reads as "I remembered a fact about you" rather than "I thought about you", which is close but not the same thing.

The picks

Best all-round answer: the upgrade-they-cannot-justify. It is the only category where "they already have one" is an argument for the gift.

If you know their routine: comfort they consider indulgent. Our pick for the best emotional return per dollar on this page.

If you know almost nothing concrete: a consumable of unreasonable quality — very good olive oil and flaky salt. It cannot duplicate anything and it cannot become clutter.
